渡辺氏離党の意味：Meaning of Watanabe's Defection

本日付のIHT紙の記事（下のリンク参照）にあるように、渡辺善美氏が麻生首相の政策への反対を表明して自民党を離党した。
麻生首相と閣僚メンバーは渡辺氏の離党の意義を見て見ぬふりをしようとしているが、もしより多くの国民が麻生氏よりも渡辺氏の政策スタンスを支持しているとすれば（実際にそうであるようにみえるが）、これが自民党の終わりの始まりになる可能性もあるといえよう。

It is reported in today's IHT article (see the link above) that Mr. Yoshimi Watanabe quits the LDP to show his disagreement with PM Aso's policies.
While Mr. Aso and his Cabinet members are trying to downplay the significance of Mr. Watanabe's defection, it could be the beginning of the end of the LDP itself, if more people support Mr. Watanabe's stance than Mr. Aso's, which seems to be the case.
