日本の競争力アップ：Japan Moved Up in Competitiveness

今朝の新聞で報道されているように、世界経済フォーラムが26日に発表した「2006年世界競争力報告」によれば、日本の競争力ランキングは上がったとのこと。昨年の10位と比べると、ドイツ、英国、台湾を抜いて7位に浮上した。
皮肉なことに、日本は「技術革新」と「保健・初等教育」の分野で1位にランクされたが、この分野こそ安倍政権が力をいれて改革しようとしている。
いずれにしても問題は、このようなランキングでは競争力の定義や基準が不明確で、順位がいいかげんであるということである。

As is reported in today's newspaper, Japan moved up in the Global Cometitiveness Ranking just published by World Economic Forum yesterday. Japan is now in the 7th place, ovetaking Germany, Britain and Taiwan by moving up from last year's 10th place.
It is a kind of irony that Japan is ranked No. 1 in terms of technological innovation and health/primary education, and these areas are exactly what the Abe administration is targeting for reform.
But the real problem is that this kind of ranking is not reliable as the definition and criteria for competitiveness are unclear.
