有名ジャズ歌手の討論：Panel by Well-known Jazz Singers

毎年恒例の「ビッグバンドジャズ祭」が今年もロス空港のシェラトンホテルで開催され、特に5月24日には4人の有名なジャズ歌手によるパネル討論会があった。
そこでは、「ジャズでどうスウィングするか」から、「どう若者によいジャズを聴いてもらうか」まで、さまざまな問題が議論された。また司会のビル・リード氏および4人の女性歌手が日本のジャズファンの間で人気が高いこともあり、議論の中で日本が何回か言及された。
多くの点がされたが、中でもティアニー・サットンが、よいジャズを聞かせれば子供たちはジャズがとても好きになると述べたことが印象的であった。
問題はどうやって若い人たちにジャズを聴いてもらうかということで、それについては参加者の間から、ユーチューブやインターネットラジオなどでジャズが簡単に聴けるようになっているので（下のリンク参照）、それを利用して若者にも聴いてもらうことができるし、そうすべきという意見が出された。
以上のようなよい議論に加えて、パネリストたちのユーモアのセンスが、このパネル討論を非常に楽しいものにしたといえよう。

There was an interesting panel discussion on standard jazz music by four well-known singers (see the photo above), as part of this year's big band jazz festival held at LAX Four Points Sheraton on May 24.
They took up a wide variey of topics, ranging from how to swing to how to expose young people to good jazz music. Interestingly, Japan was mentioned a few times in the course of the discussion, as all of them, including moderator Bill Reed, are very popular among Japanese jazz fans.
A number of good points were made, such as Tierney Sutton's argument that if we provide school kids with a chance to listen to good jazz music, they love it. Then the question remains as to how to make them listen to it in the first place.
It was suggested by quite a few participants in the Q&A session that we can and should make use of good jazz content available on the net, such as YouTube and internet radio jazz programs (see the references above), which are free and easily listened to by anyone including young people.
The session was really enjoyable, not only for these good points, but also for the good sense of humor possessed by all the panelists.
