G8で食料危機問題を議論：Food Crisis Put on G-8 Agenda

深刻な食糧不足に対応：Responding to Worsening Shortages

「Asahi.com」の記事（下のリンク参照）にあるように、日本政府はこの7月のG8サミットで、グローバルな食料危機問題を議題として取り上げるとのこと。
実際、政府はサミットで食料問題を避けて、環境問題だけに集中することを希望していたといわれる。それは日本が環境についてはイニシアティブが取れるのに対して、食料問題ではそれができそうもないからである。
しかしこれだけ食料不足が深刻になり、途上国では暴動まで起こっているので、政府としてもこの問題をこの夏のサミットの議題にせざるをえなくなったといえる。

It is reported in the Asahi.com article linked above that the Japanese government has decided to put the "global food crisis" on the the agenda of the G8 Summit in July.
Actually, the government is said to have preferred to focus on the environmental issue only, rather than taking up the food issue at the Summit, because Japan could take some initiative in dealing with the environment but not with food.
However, it is apparent now that food shortages have become so serious, even causing riots in some developing nations, that the government has no choice but to put it on the Summit agenda this summer.
