日米経済の見通し：Prospects for US & Japan's Economy
今回は景気後退が不可避：Recession Seems Inevitable

本田氏の話
4月16日に本田敬吉氏の定例会があり、そこでサブプライムローン問題が日米経済に及ぼす影響などについて議論がなされた。
本田氏は最初に、巷で取りざたされているドルの暴落は起こらないことを強調。その理由として、ドルの下落は米国の輸出を促進するとともに、米の多国籍企業の海外保有資産のドルでの価値を上げることで米国のプラスになる点を指摘した。
米経済の見通しについては、本田氏によると、景気後退がかなり確実になっており、技術革新にもとづく楽観論が急速に後退しているという。
他の参加者も最近気づいた経済状況の悪化の兆候について報告。特に日本では不動産市場と中小企業部門にその影響が広がっているようであった。
今後の見通しについては、さまざまな見方が提示され、今回の金融危機がもたらした世界的不況は戦後では例のないほど深刻なものになるという極端な可能性も指摘された。もちろん、そうなってほしくないことはいうまでもない。

On April 16, Mr. Keikichi Honda's regular dinner meeting was held, where the effects of the subprime loan problem on the U.S. and Japanese economies were discussed.
Mr. Honda first pointed out that the collapse of the U.S. dollar seems unlikely, because a decline in the dollar would benefit American multi-national companies by stimulating U.S. exports as well as by increasing the dollar value of the overseas assets that owned by those companies.
As for the economic outlook for the U.S. economy, the recession is a definite possiblity now, and the optimism based on prospects for technological innovations is fading rather rapidly, according to Mr. Honda.
Other participants also shared their views on economic difficulties that they have recently noticed, especially in the real estate market and the small business sector in Japan. For future prospects, various possibilities were pointed out, including an extremely pessimistic view that the global recession due to the current financial crisis could be worse than any previous recession in the postwar period -- hopefully that is not going to happen in reality.
