「Japan in Context」1月会合（1月29日）
JICの1月会合のハイライトは、何といってもピーター・マクミラン教授による和歌の英訳の朗読であった。マクミラン教授は和歌を見事な英語の詩に翻訳した著書を出版したばかりで、その情報は上のリンクを参照のこと。
マクミラン教授によれば、和歌は日本人の自然な心と気持ちをもっとも素直に表したもので、その点では有名な俳句（もともと俳句は和歌の一部から出たとのこと）よりも日本人の表現として自然なものであるという。
ＪＩＣの会合では、色々な分野の特技や知識を持った人たちと会えるが、和歌を詩的に英訳する教授との出会いは、最近になく興奮した出来事であった。

"Japan in Context" January Meeting (1/29)
A highlight of the JIC January Meeting was fascinating poetry reading by Professor Peter McMillan, who has just published a book, in which he translates "ｗaka" (traditional Japanese poems) into English in a very artistic way.
Peter McMillan says that "waka" poems are the most natural way of expressing Japanese minds and feelings, even more so than popular "haiku," which was orginally part of "waka."
It is really nice to get to know all kinds of people with diverse expertise and knowledge at JIC, and meeting the "waka" professor is one of the most exciting experiences that I have recently had.
