「かぐや」か「SELINE」か？："KAGUYA" or "SELINE"?

月探索衛星の軌道入り：Japan's Lunar Explorer in Orbit Now

実にスムーズに軌道に入ったとのニュースが本日の「Japan Times」（下のリンク参照）で報じられたが、JAXA（宇宙航空研究開発機構）の発表によると、日本の月探索衛星はうまく月を回る軌道に入ることに成功したとのこと。これでいよいよ月面観察の作業に入ることになる。
これは日本にとっても世界にとっても大変な成果であるが、その一方で気になる点は、この衛星の名前である。英語では「SELINE」という名前で、これは複雑な英語の表現（SELenological and ENgineering Explorer）の頭文字を取ったそうであるが、日本名は「かぐや」で、これは「かぐや姫」から来ている。
このように違うネーミングを使うことは、グローバルな脈絡の中では混乱を招きがちで、日本の成果を世界に知らせる上では必ずしもよいアイデアとは言えないのではないだろうか。

What a smooth entrance! It is reported in today's Japan Times (see the link above) that Japan's first lunar explorer has successfully been entered into an orbit around the moon, according to JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). It is now ready to start its observation mission.
While this is already a significant achievement for Japan and for the world, one thing to take note of is the name of this explorer, "SELENE," which comes from the English words, "SELenological and ENgineering Explorer," but at the same time its Japanese name is "KAGUYA," which orginates in a Japanese fable, "Kaguya-hime."
Using different names this way can be quite confusing in the global context and not a good idea to publicize Japan's accomplishment to the outside world.
