米テンプル大学が09年度から：Temple Univ. from 2009

今朝の朝日新聞（p. 1；下のリンク参照）で報道されているように、米テンプル大が2009年度をめどに日本の学士号を取得できる正式な日本の大学を開設するという。これまで海外の大学は、テンプル大も含めて、日本校を設置できたが、それはあくまで日本で正式に承認された学位ではなく、その大学の母国での学位しか取れなかった。
これまで最大の障害になっていたのは、大学が校地・校舎を所有しているという条件であったが、その条件も緩和されつつある。したがって、テンプル大はおそらく2009年度には、文科省の大学設置審議会で認可を得ることができるであろうと朝日新聞は報じている。

It is reported in today's Asashi Shimbun (p. 1; see the link above) that Temple University is going to establish a school as a formally approved university to offer degrees in Japan, most likely beginning in the academic year 2009. So far, foreign universities, including Temple, have been able to set up their Japanese campuses to help offer degrees in their respective countries, but not in Japan, as approved by Japan's Education Ministry.
One of the key obstacles has been the requirement that universities own land and structure for their campus, but that requirement is being relaxed. So, Temple University will probably be able to get approved by the Education Minstry's university council to be Japan's first foreign university by the spring 2009, according to Asahi Shimbun.
