日本1人当りGDP14位：Japan 14th in Per Capita GDP Ranking

家計貯蓄率も急低下：Dropping Household Savings Ratio

本日の新聞報道によれば、内閣府の発表で（下のリンク参照）日本の1人当たりGDPが14位になったとのことである。日本の１人当たりGDPは1993年に1位だったが、その後円安やデフレが続いたために順位を落としてきた。
名目GDPの規模では、日本は世界第2位を保っている一方で、2005年には中国がイギリスとフランスを抜いて4位に浮上し、3位のドイツに迫っている。
同レポートはまた、2005年に日本の家計貯蓄率が3.1％と過去最低を記録し、米英の水準に近づいたことを報告している。これは高齢化によるところもあるが、所得が伸びないので家計が貯蓄するどころか貯蓄を取り崩しているためでもあるといえよう。

It is reported in today's newspapers that according to the latest report published by the Cabinet Office (see the link above), Japan's per capita GDP for 2005 was in the 14th place. Japan once was number 1 back in 1993, but has been slipping in ranking because of the weaker yen and deflation since then.
While Japan maintained its number 2 ranking in terms of nominal GDP, China moved up to the 4th place next to Germany, surpassing the UK and France for 2005.
The report also shows the fact that Japan's household savings ratio for 2005 was only 3.1%, lowest ever and closer to the US and the UK. This may be partly due to Japan's aging population and partly due to stagnant household income, which tends to encourage household dissavings rather than savings.
