この本は、団塊世代の定年とそれに関連する現象を紹介しているだけでなく、そのような現象の背景、理由、意味、展望などを提示しているという点で高く評価できる。
特に、団塊世代のほとんどの人がなぜ定年を迎えても働き続けたいのかの理由を見ることは興味深い。この本の説明によれば（p. 51）、もちろん主なものは経済的な理由で、日常の生活費をまかなうためにさらなる収入がほしいということであるが、それと同じくらい重要な理由は、満足感を得るために、社会的に人とつながっていたいからというものである。
著者たちは結論として、団塊の世代は今後ボランティアや地域の活動において社会の中核的なメンバーになるべきであると述べている。これは納得する以外にない。

This is an excellent book, which presents not only various facts on retiring babyboomers and related phenomena, but also their backgrounds, reasons, implications and future prospects in the context of aging population in Japan.
It is interesting to find out why an overwhelming majority of babyboomers wish to work even after their retirement age. According to the authors (p. 51), the main reason is, of course, economic in that they need to supplement their income for daily living, but at the same time, an almost equally important reason is that they would like to keep their social contacts and networks for satisfaction in their lives.
The authors seem to suggest that retiring babyboomers should become important members of the society in terms of volunteer work and local community activities. Anyone would agree with them in this respect.
