防衛庁が省昇格へ：Defense Agency to Become Ministry

民主党も賛成！：Even Supported by the Democratic Party!

本日「防衛庁の省昇格法案」が、与党だけでなく民主党の賛成も得て衆院本会議を通過した。
これはある意味で驚くべき展開である。なぜなら今はどの政党も行財政改革を強調しており、さらに民主党はイラクや北朝鮮問題について安倍政権の軍事的なスタンスを批判しているにもかかわらずである。
野党はもう少し創造力を発揮して、より包括的な省庁再編案を提示すべきで、例えば環境、情報通信、あるいは防衛について省を創設するとともに、既存の多くの省庁を統廃合するような代替案を提出すべきではなかっただろうか。

Today, the House of Representatives passed a bill for the "Self Defense Agency" to be elevated to a "Ministry," with the support of not only the ruling parties but also the leading opposition, the Democratic Party!
This is a somewhat unbelievable development at a time when administrative/fiscal reform is emphasized by all parties, and the Democratic Party is criticizing the Abe administration regarding its military stance toward Iraq and North Korea.
The opposition party could and should have been more imaginative by proposing a comprehensive administrative reform plan to create some ministries regarding the environment, info-communications and possibly self defense and to consoliate/abolish quite a few existing ministries and agencies.
