http://www.nikkei.co.jp/news/keizai/20061114AT3S1400P14112006.htmlThe Cabinet Office has just announced that the Japanese economy grew about 0.5% in the real terms in the July-September quarter from the previous quarter, that means the annual growth rate of 2.0%, which is unexpectedly strong, especially compared to most forecast.
However, a closer look reveals a widening gap between the business/export sector on one hand and the household/public sector on the other in that the former sector's positive growth offset the latter's negative sector, resulting in the positive growth performance this time.
Needless to say, this performance might not be sustained if export demand falls due to some slowdown of the U.S. economy in the near future.
