「おくりびと」がオスカーを受賞した理由：Why "Departures" Won Oscar

伝統的な人間性が癒しに：Comforted by Traditional Humanity

なぜ日本映画「おくりびと」が外国語映画部門で必ずしも前評判は高くなかったにもかかわれず、アカデミー賞を取れたのか。
それは本日付の「Mainichi.jp」の記事（下のリンク参照）で指摘されているように、アメリカ人が、他の映画で扱われているようなヘビーなイシューに少しへきへきしている感があり、むしろ日本映画が示唆しているような伝統的な人間性によって癒されたからであろう。
もちろん、「おくりびと」が米国市場で商業的に成功するかどうかは、また別問題であることはいうまでもない。

Why did Japanese film "Departures" win the Oscar for best foreign-language movie although it was clearly an underdog in that category?
It was because Americans seem tired of heavy issues that other movies are dealing with, and must have felt comforted by the kind of traditional humanity that the Japanese film is implying, as pointed out in today's Mainichi.jp article (see the link above).
Needless to say, whether "Departures" will commercially be successful in the US is another matter.
