急減する子供の数：Rapidly Declining Number of Children

こどもの日の今日、内外の新聞がレポートしているように（下のリンク参照）、日本の15歳以下の子供の数は過去27年間にわたって減り続けており、今年4月1日現在、全人口の13.5％まで落ち込み、これまでの最低記録をまた更新した。
これは、イタリアやドイツと並んで、主要国で最低の比率である。
さらに65歳以上の人口比率が世界一という事実も考えると、日本の労働力が急速に減少し、公共部門のサービス、特に公的年金制度を支えることが難しくなることは確実で、実際にもうすでに困難になっているといえる。
このままでは、間もなく「こどもの日」自体がなくなってしまうかもしれない。

Today (on Children's Day) it is reported in both Japanese and foreign news papers (see the links above) that the number of children under 15 has been declining for the last 27 years in Japan, hitting a record low 13.5 percent of Japan's total population, as of April 1, 2008.
This percentage is comparable to that in Italy and Germany, and among the lowest of all major countries in the world.
Also given the fact that Japan has the world's highest ratio of people older than 65, Japan will face, and actually is already facing, the serious problem of rapidly shrinking work force to support its public sector services in general and the public pension program in particular.
"Children's Day" itself might vanish in Japan soon.
