社説の翻訳が問題？：Lost in Translation of Editorial?

日英文の違い: Difference Between Japanese & English Versions

本日の日本の主要な新聞はすべて、中国の温家宝首相の訪日と日中の「戦略的互恵関係」へのステップに関する社説を掲げている。ここで興味深いことに、通常は安倍首相の政策に批判的ないし慎重な立場をとっている新聞（例えば朝日や毎日）が両首脳の会談の結果について比較的前向きの支持を表明しているのに対して、普段は安倍政権を支持する立場をとる傾向がある新聞は批判的な見出しを日本語の社説につけている（読売「『政』でもたつく戦略的互恵関係」、産経「互恵の道筋をより明確に」）。
中国のような国が相手なので、このように対照的になることは理解できるが、理解できないのは同じ読売新聞の社説について、日本語版と英語版で重要な表現の違いがあることである（以下のリンク参照）。
まず社説の見出しであるが、日本語版は「『政』でもたつく戦略的互恵関係」となっているのに対して、英語版では「政治問題で日中関係の進展を遅らせるな」となっている。明らかに日本語版の見出しのほうが英語版より否定的な印象を与えるといえる。次に社説の結論であるが、日本語版の結論は「安倍首相の年内訪中や胡主席の来日など首脳対話を通じて前進を図らなければならない」となっているのに対して、英語版では「安倍首相の年内訪中や胡主席の訪日が目的達成に役立つであろう」（..will help accomplish this goal）と述べている。これは本日掲載されたあらゆる社説の文章のなかでもっとも前向きの支持を与える表現の一つである。
読売はこのような日本語版と英語版の違いがなぜ起こったのか、そのどちらが真の社説の立場なのか明確に説明する義務を読者に対して負っているといえよう。

Today, all the major Japanese newspapers post their editorials on Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to Japan and a possible step to build a “strategic, mutually beneficial relationship” between the two countries. It is interesting to observe that those newspapers that are usually critical of, or at least cautious about, Prime Minister Abe’s policies, for example, Asahi and Mainichi, are expressing relatively supportive and encouraging opinions on the results of the summit talks between the two Premiers, whereas those newspapers that are normally supportive of the Abe administration post critical headlines (“Politics hinders strategic, mutually beneficial relationship” in Yomiuri, and “Clearer roadmap needed towards mutually beneficial relationship” in Sankei) in Japanese.
While this contrast is understandable in dealing with a country like China, what is not comprehensible is the fact that there are some important differences in key expressions between the (original) Japanese version of the editorial in Yomiuri Shimbun and the (translated) English version of the editorial in The Daily Yomiuri (see the references).
First of all, the headline of the Japanese editorial in Yomiuri reads “Politics hinders strategic, mutually beneficially relationship,” whereas that of the English editorial is “Don’t let political issues hinder Japan-China ties.” Clearly, the Japanese headline sounds more negative than its English counterpart. Second, the concluding sentence in the Japanese version reads “This goal must be advanced through summit talks on the occasions of Abe’s visit to China this year and Hu’s visit to Japan,” whereas the conclusion of the English editorial is: “Abe’s visit to China this year and Hu’s visit to Japan will help accomplish this goal,” which is in fact one of the most supportive and encouraging expressions of all the editorial sentences in today’s newspapers.
Yomiuri Shimbun owes the reader a clear explanation why these differences have happened and which is its real editorial position on this important issue.
